For more than 20 years, Tucson has been celebrating life on two wheels with our annual April Bike Fest. What began as a single day of encouragement to leave your car at home—remember the old “spare the air” slogan?—Bike Fest has ballooned to fill an entire month with bike rides, raffles, parties and more. Last year there were more than 50 bike-related events, and this year is promising to be even bigger!
There’s the fabulous Cyclovia Tucson on April 19 (see pages 14–15 for details), when thousands of people will hit the streets on two wheels and two feet. But that’s just the beginning. Other fun events planned so far include an overnight bike camping trip for families April 25-26, the Second Annual Bicycle Easter Egg Hunt on April 5 and return of the much-loved 2-Mile Commuter Challenge that runs throughout the month. A huge celebration is in the works to wrap up Bike Fest on April 30.
“One of the features of Bike Fest Tucson is that anyone—that means YOU—can dream up a Bike Fest event and list it on the website (BikeFestTucson.com),” says Kylie Walzak, program manager for Living Streets Alliance, which organizes Bike Fest. “If you’ve got a fun event idea, head to the Bike Fest website for details on planning and hosting. We’re hoping to double the number of events to 100 this year!”
