LOUISVILLE, Colo.—The US 36 Bikeway opened on Tuesday, March 1, sparking a buzz around cycling in the US 36 corridor. The bikeway was a major component of the US 36 Express Lanes Project, and on Saturday, June 18, 36 Commuting Solutions will host a community ride to celebrate the completion of the bikeway project.
The “US 36 Bikeway Community Ride” encourages riders of all levels and ages to get out and try the US 36 Bikeway. The event will begin in Louisville/Superior at the Avista Adventist Hospital parking lot at 9:30 a.m., and cyclists will ride to the RTD Table Mesa Station for festivities that will conclude at noon. Each end of the ride will have booths, speakers and giveaways.
36 Commuting Solutions Executive Director Audrey DeBarros says, “The US 36 Bikeway makes cycling in the corridor easy and enjoyable, and we hope that our upcoming community ride introduces even more riders to the offerings of this new path.”
The 18-mile concrete path stretches from Westminster to Boulder, is 12-feet wide and includes underpasses, wayfinding signage and provides a safe thoroughfare for cyclists to travel the US 36 corridor and connect to Denver. One section of the bikeway, near the 1ST BANK Center, has seen over 27,000 trips in just under one year. DeBarros adds, “We are delighted to see years of advocacy and hard work reveal a safe and accessible highway for cyclists.”
The commuter bikeway is part of the US 36 Express Lanes Project, which was a multi-modal, public-private partnership led by the Regional Transportation District (RTD), Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT), High Performance Transportation Enterprise (HPTE) and Plenary Roads Denver (PRD). In addition to the bikeway, the project included two free general purpose lanes in each direction and one tolled Express Lane in each direction – offering users the choice to ride the bus, carpool, bike, use the two free reconstructed general purpose lanes or pay a toll in the Express Lanes.
The event is co-sponsored by RTD, CDOT, HPTE and Plenary (PRD).
