The Municipality of An- chorage was being honored at the White House as part of the Lets Move Cities Towns and Counties initiative which seeks to combat childhood obesity. Anchorage is one of 63 communities meeting this initiatives goals such as posting healthy eating guides at city food service facilities and offering school meal programs. Now partners from a broad array of Anchorage entities are coming together to boost the community to Lets Move All-Star status. As a parent I was impressed by this effort to help kids make healthy choices. As a cy- clist I was pleased to see that biking is high on the Lets Move list of priorities. Anchorage already has some of the items on this check list such as a three-foot passing law and bike racks on buses. And more funding for bike infrastruc- ture is a wise investment to get us all moving safely. This isnt just about recreation its about how people move about our city and maintain an active lifestyle. Yet there is more to this initiative than just promoting bikes and trails. It is a communi- ty-wide effort. To make sure that healthy exer- cise is followed by healthy eating Lets Move wants to expand the number of farmers markets and community gardens in Anchorage. Growing your own food or eating locally-farmed produce is a healthy choice that boosts the local economy and brings the community together. The Lets Move initiative encourages zoning changes that would inspire land use policies to foster these markets and gardens. While I work and volunteer for groups that support bikes and trails Lets Move is challeng- ing us all to step outside of our roles and think about the bigger picture. Anchorage needs bike lanes and trails and I hope they help people exercise on their way to a farmers market or the community garden they tend or to the many other places where we live work and play every day. Connecting those dots will be a great way to promote health in our community. These new bicycle treatments combined with smart safety initiatives education and innovative transportation tools will go a long way towards making your biking experience in Anchorage better. Vision Zero On March 3 2016 the Municipality of Anchorage launched a Vision Zero Initiative kick-off event at the University of Alaska. Thats why Anchor- age launched a Vision Zero initiative. Vision Zero is a proven and comprehensive approach to reducing vehicle pedestrian and bicycle accidents through speed management street design and behavior change. It was first launched in Sweden almost 20 years ago and this proactive approach has resulted in a 30 percent reduction in traffic deaths and serious injuries across the country even while the number of trips has risen. Anchorage intends to match that level of success. Anchorage is the northernmost community in the U.S. to adopt Vision Zeros approach to increas- ing public safety. This is a data-driven project and includes a far-reaching public engagement campaign by examining existing conditions and the Vision Zero steering committee led by Bike Anchorage includes representatives from health and human services providers public safety officials and community development organizations. Vision Zero began to be implemented in the U.S. in 2014 and has quickly spread across the country. Cities are using innovations like crowd-sourced safety maps traffic safety instruction and public transit technologies that feature alarms that flash when people approach the drivers blind spots. Communities are expanding partnerships with local businesses and non-profits to provide ride vouchers to bar patrons to reduce drinking and driving. As Vision Zero has proven the more people know and the more we use new and existing technology the safer we become. The organizing partners launched Anchorages Vision Zero March 3 at the University of Alaska at Anchorage. Speaker after speaker and an overflow audience talked about the importance of making Anchorage safe and accessible for multi-modal travel. As part of Vision Zero Anchorage we have conducted a robust public engagement process includ- ing public meetings in March and April and an online survey that captured additional feedback on regional traffic safety. A final report will be ready this spring and the steering com- mittee will generate policy recommendations for Anchorage. We have the opportunity to make Anchorage safer and more accommodating for everyone. Thank you for working together for that goal. PEDALSMART SHARE THE ROAD and BIKES MAY USE FULL LANE These signs remind motorists that bicyclists have full rights to the roadways and that they must wait until it is safe to change lanes to pass cyclists. However cyclists have the right to ride in the roadway or to take the lane for safety purposes on roadways without these signs. These signs will be placed where there are gaps in the bike lane network and on shared roadways. Bike Lanes THROUGH Intersections Bike lanes are often positioned to the right of vehicles that may be turning right at driveways or at intersections. At locations with a right-turn lane drivers and cyclists must safely share space as their travel paths cross. Cyclists should be aware of vehicles appearing to turn. Right-turning drivers must yield to cyclists as they cross the bike lane. While driving always use turn signals check blind spots and turn with care. Bike Lanes END at Intersections At many locations bike lanes are planned to end in advance of signalized intersections and resume after the intersection. This configuration gives cyclists an option to use the crosswalk like a pedestrian via a driveway or ramp up to the sidewalk or to continue through the intersection in a travel lane like a vehicle. Shared Lane Markings Sharrows Shared lane markings reinforce cyclists right to the street by signifying a shared lane environment. Typical installations include bicycle boulevards shared roadways and short gaps in the bike lane network. In the coming years new signs and street markings will help create a more bike-friendly city as the Municipality and State implement recommendations from the 2010 Anchorage Bicycle Plan. Start at the Alaska Railroad Depot just down the hill from Downtown and get on the Ship Creek Trail. It winds along Ship Creek through industrial areas up and over the Alaska Railroad and back into dense woods for about 3.5 miles. The trail ends in Mountain View one of Americas most diverse neighborhoods with many ethnic restaurants and some great brews from Resolution Brewery. Head east by cutting through the neighborhood on Mountain View Drive to Davis Park then take the multi-use trail that parallels Glenn Highway. Here the trail boasts long stretches so its a great place for fast training. It is also relatively flat with a few little hills that are barely noticeable but youll end up gaining around 500 feet of elevation. Pull into Pizza Man for a quick refueling stop then head back downtown. EARTHQUAKEPARK WILDLIFE VIEWING OPPORTUNITIES Moose bears and belugas NEIGHBORHOODS VISITED Turnagain If youre looking for singletrack en route to or from Kincaid the Kincaid trails are the obvious choice. But a lesser known yet fascinating place is also available the 134-acre Earthquake Park. It has easy access from a parking lot at the end of Northern Lights and its a quick ride from Westchester Lagoon. A short ride from the parking lot leads to an interpretive park that explains the 1964 Good Friday Earthquake in front of a stunning view of Cook Inlet. The jumbled terrain is the result of a massive land slide that occurred during this magnitude 9.2 quake. The Coastal Trail bisects the park but on either side there are countless paths of various levels of difficulty. These trails are not maintained but youll find various makeshift bridges to help you through. The park is fun year-round but if you visit in the summer be sure to wear long sleeves and pants or keep moving to escape hordes of hungry mosquitos Great Rides3Around Anchorage By STEPHEN SCHELL nchorage has fantastic bike trails with unique personalities. Whether youre commuting taking a lei- surely weekend ride looking for some singletrack or doing some serious training Anchorage has it allA 30miles round-trip Route Mileage Varies BikeLife Anchorage 11 The Tony Knowles Coastal Trail is a jewel. It is well-used and appreciated year-round by people boating picnicking ice skating and just generally enjoying life. Start at Westchester Lagoon mile marker 0. Head south and pass under the Alaska Railroad and the views of Cook Inlet Mount Susitna and the Alaska and Tordrillo mountain ranges will immediately dominate the scene. A great stopping point is Fish Creek at mile marker 0.5 for the first of many panoramic views. Pro tip this is a good place to see the Aurora Borealis Continue south along the coast. At Mile 2.5 the hill turns into the woods at Earthquake Park and youll encounter the first big climb. It tops off at Point Woronzof a dramatic sand bluff with a stunning view in every direction. To your south jets take off from the airport. To the west wind turbines spin lazily above Fire Island. To the north Denali looms over the swirling silty waters of Cook Inlet. At certain times of the year you might be lucky enough to spot a pod of beluga whales as they follow their prey. And to the east the city skyline is dwarfed by the Chugach Mountains. Head down the hill and youll pass two parking lots the last opportunity to get to the road before Kincaid. The trail mostly stays in the woods from this point on. Keep your eyes peeled for browsing moose. Around mile marker 7 take a break and hike down to the beach and rest against sand dunes. At mile marker 8 the trail begins the last steep uphill as you approach Kincaid Chalet. The coastal trail offers something different in every season. Since it can be busy be sure to show your best etiquette with others whether on bike foot or hoof. If youre feeling ambitious start your ride in Eagle River and connect to the Ship Creek Trail. A short ride through downtown brings you to the north end of the Tony Knowles Coastal Trail. At mile marker 2 take the path less traveled and wind your way through Earthquake Park until you find the Coastal Trail again then continue your ride to Kincaid. Did you know that Anchorage has been designated the mountain bike capital of Alaska Who could have guessed back in 2005 that An- chorage would not only start building trails specifically for mountain biking but on such a scale as to be recognized by the experts on fantastic mountain biking at Singletracks.com It all started in 2000. Martin Stewart president of the Alyeska Ski Club and a fellow coach and I created Mighty Bikes so that we could ride and be involved in an activity that families could enjoy. We gathered kids from the Mighty Mites ski program and rode them all over the Hillside and Kincaid Parks to keep them in shape during summer so that they could start ski-racing season in top condi- tion come winter. As the popularity of the program grew so did our need for qualified coaches and parents to help keep track of these kids. Little did we real- ize that we were creating a mountain biking community that welcomed all youth not just ski club members. Today the program has 300 kids 50 coaches and a cadre of helpful parents. A process of com- munity meetings gave birth to Single- track Advocates whose mission is to preserve maintain and create natural trails in the area. First we wanted to preserve our access to the trails we enjoyed and not get ourselves kicked off of them like loathsome trespassers. Next we demonstrated that we could maintain trails by staging work parties to fix nui- sances such as mud holes and bank ero- sions. We coordinated a National Trails Day volunteer effort to address these problems on Rovers Run adjacent to Campbell Creek. We discovered that different user groups appreciated trails for different attributes. While constructing a re- route for example the skijorers started at one end and the mountain bikers at the other. When the two groups met in the middle the skijorers project was noticeably wider than that of the mountain bikers. It was an epiphany for both groups so we shared a laugh as we cracked open our beers at the end of the day. Through this work we discovered that while sharing is good we also needed our own trail system which inspired the third component of our mission to create singletrack. We approached the city about designing a network of sustainable mountain bike trails that would disperse user groups and reduce conflicts. Park land in the Anchorage bowl is a precious thing. We wanted to make sure that we wouldnt disturb the rec- reation experience of other users. Sin- gletrack Advocates hired Jon Under- wood of Happy Trails to construct a singletrack trail system on the Anchor- age hillside. It was immediately popu- lar and on most summer days the trails were choked by smiling riders out to shred a few turns. Clearly even more trails were needed. One day I received an email from Lee Bolling a young engineer who thought the same thing as he wrote We need a Hillside STA trail system on the west end of town Still exhausted from the effort of the first project I gratefully handed over the reins to Lee as project manager. I gave advice wrote grants and helped him navigate the steps re- quired to launch another major volun- teer effort. By the fall of 2011 Singletrack Advo- cates cut the ribbon on nine miles of singletrack in Kincaid Park nestled among a world class cross-country ski trail system. It is inspiring that two user groups could get along so well to allow such a thing to happen. It took years to build trust and prove that mountain bikers could play nicely and make a meaningful contribution to recreation in Anchorage. Growth continued in 2013 as Lee and talented volunteers added another 6.5 miles to the Kincaid singletrack trail system on the north side of the Kincaid park road. This section designed by Ed Kessler and Brian Vaughn of Ptarmigan Ptrails is decidedly different from any- thing previously built in Anchorage addressing a growing desire for flow trails with significant banked turns and jump lines. These three major trail projects add up to 25 miles of singletrack construct- ed since 2005. They are enjoyed year- round even in winter with the explod- ing popularity of fat biking. Im pretty proud of the fact that we have created a mountain biking com- munity in Anchorage. Bikes are flying out of bike shops. Visitors come from miles away to ride our trails proving that mountain biking is good for the economy. Whats next Im not completely sure but I have a few ideas in mind. I may not be able to swing a Pulaski axe like I could 10 years ago but I can probably round up a bunch of people who can. When riding in a bike lane ride on the left side of the laneat least 4 feet from parked cars. Look inside each parked car before you pass it. If youre unable to see someone inside or you spot someone inside move outside the Door Zone or slow down and pass carefully. Watch behind you. Keep track of traffic behind youso youll know whether you have enough room if you must swerve suddenly out of the Door Zone. A mirror helps you see traffic behind you as you pedal forward. Riding predictably and following the law are the keys to safe bicycling. Knowing and following the rules help all road users properly anticipate and react to each other. Dont ride on the sidewalks downtown. Anchorage law prohibits riding sidewalks in the Central Business District. Remember Wheels yield to heels. When necessary use entire travel lane. Move toward the center when the lane is too narrow for motorists to pass safely or when youre moving at the same speed as traffic. To cross an intersection use the lane farthest to the right that points to where you are going. Follow lane markings to cross an intersection.If you cant change lanes to turn left ride across the street to the other side and align your bike with traffic. Never ride against traffic. Riding against traffic is dangerous and illegal.Motorists and pedestrians are not looking for cyclists riding the wrong way down a street. While the rice is cooking fry the bacon in a medium saut pan over medium-high heat. Drain off fat and wrap the bacon in paper towels then press on the towels to crumble the bacon. Anchorage Metropolitan Area Transportation Solutions has partnered with the Municipality of Anchorages Long Range Planning section to work on the Spenard Corridor Strategic Plan or SCSP Anchorages first transit oriented development plan. Working with residents businesses community groups and other stake- holders this plan will take a comprehensive look at the Spenard com- munity corridor -- from Hillcrest Drive to W. International Airport Road -- to determine opportunities for investment in housing transportation networks business growth community services and more. The planning process for the SCSP brings together a team of planning and design professionals who have expertise in transit oriented devel- opment engineering bicycle and pedestrian planning architecture and urban design. You were out on the road and blew a tire. Or maybe you just want to save some mon- ey on costly riding equipment. Well whether you have to call an audible from the office or on the road or youre just interested in ways to save here are hacks that can help make your ride easier. By GRIFFIN BOHM 26 BikeLife Anchorage BIKE HACKS NEWSPAPER WIND VEST Does your office get a daily newspaper that no one seems to read Well you can finally put it to good use. All you have to do is stuff a newspaper into your shirt or jacket and it will serve as an admirable windbreaker. You can crumple it up or put it in flat whichever is more comfortable but the more you stuff the more insulation youll get. Its a trick still used by pro cyclists. RECYCLE REPURPOSE RETHINK A host of hints and hacks for your ride TRASH BAG RAIN COAT Just poke arm and head holes through the bot- tom of a regular black trash bag and voila A totally waterproof raincoat that will protect your clothing from the rain and help keep you warm although we hav- ent figured out how to keep those arms dry. PATCH YOUR INNER TUBES New tubes can cost up to 10 apiece but patch kits can be found for as little as 4-5 in your local bike shop and they can rescue several inner tubes. Pro tip practice patching a tube once or twice at home so youll have the confidence to patch your tire on the road when needed. But if your tire has a gash in it a patch kit wont solve the problem. In that case use a dollar bill or energy bar wrapper folded to fit inside the gash to keep your tube from popping through. CARDBOARD FENDER All you need here is any old piece of cardboard cut it so that its long and thin like a hot dog bun. Then just jam it in between your seat stays on the bottom of your saddle. You want it nice and snug so that it wont fall out on the ride home. Make sure that the cardboard reaches far enough back to block any spray your rear tire would otherwise shoot all over your back. MAKE YOUR OWN RIDE FOOD Bars and gels can be great but theyre often costly and sometimes taste a bit like card- board. But things like nuts raisins or beef jerky make for excellent ride snacks try making your own trail mix. But remember to pack things that sit well nothing will make you want to head in early quite like an unhappy stomach. GROCERY BAG SEATSHOE COVER If rain is coming protect your seat and your bum with just a grocery bag and a rubber band. Wrap the grocery bag around the seat and secure it un- derneath with the rubber band. Then when youre ready to head home just remove the bag and you will have a nice dry seat for your ride. Reuse the grocery bag and rubber band and another iden- tical set to wrap around your shoes and those nice leather shoes you love will be safe from the elements. BUY USED Cycling equipment can be expensive but it doesnt have to be. Often there is plenty of high-quality used gear out there that will cost you a fraction of buying new. Craigslist and Theproscloset.com are ideal places to look for everything from used bikes to shoes pedals or other equipment. Be careful buying a used helmet you dont want a damaged one Companies like Green Guru in Boulder and Alchemy Goods in Seattle create a wide range of urban bags and products from used bike tubes banners and other recycled materials. 28 BikeLife Anchorage WHAT IS A COMPLETE STREET They are streets that are designed for pedestrians bicyclists motorists and transit riders of all ages and abilities. Although there is no one size fits all for a complete street most respond to the community in which they reside. A complete street may include sidewalks bike lanes or wide paved shoulders special bus lanes comfortable and accessible public transportation stops frequent and safe crossing opportunities median islands accessible pedestrian signals curb extensions narrower travel lanes and roundabouts. HOW WILL A COMPLETE STREET POLICY CHANGE ANCHORAGE The creation of a Complete Streets policy will affect how our communi- ty roads are designed and emphasize the entire right of way to safely ac- commodate all users regardless of age ability or mode of transportation. Streets that are not designed for all users typically serve only motorists and create unsafe environments for others. Complete streets allow peo- ple to have safe and convenient options for getting to work to school to the grocery store and other amenities. Giving people the flexibility to choose the transportation mode that works best for them has been proven to lower road congestion improve air quality provide healthy alternatives to driving increase travel efficiency and improve quality of life. Complete Streets are also helpful in times of economic downturn and building more low-cost infrastructure for bicycling and walking can actually create more jobs than traditional car-focused transportation projects. WHERE ARE COMPLETE STREETS BEING BUILT As of 2014 58 re- gional planning organizations 58 counties and 564 municipalities in 48 states have adopted Complete Street policies to create safer multimodal transportation networks. HOW IS A COMPLETE STREET POLICY CREATED AMATS will begin work on a Complete Streets policy in April 2016. It will be drafted in co- ordination with state and local municipal agencies and the public. This draft will then be presented to the AMATS Technical Advisory Commit- tee and AMATS Policy Committee for review and approval. We have witnessed a change in our students ability to focus in class connect socially and improve fitness and attitude toward school and their peers. Assistant Principal Payson UT A Danish study in 2012 showed that kids concentrate better after biking or walking to school. The study titled Mass Experiment 2012 looked at the links between concentration diet and exercise. The survey explored nearly 20000 Danish kids between the ages of 5 and 19. It found that kids who cy- cled or walked to school rather than traveling by car or public transporta- tion performed measurably better on tasks demanding concentration such as solving puzzles and that the effects lasted for up to four hours after they got to school. The study showed positive cognitive benefits from cycling and not just for school-age kids. And yet these connections are only beginning to be adequately explored. More recently Specialized Bicycle Components founder and CEO Mike Sinyard has long dealt with the effects of attention deficit hyperactivity disor- der or ADHD in his own life. He no- ticed that those symptoms seemed to dissipate after returning from a ride. He also saw the positive benefits that riding has had on his son Anthony who also suffers from ADHD. In try- ing to better understand ADHD and bicyclings apparent positive effects he decided to explore more of the science behind ridings impact on the brain and began to assemble a team to study ADHD through evidence-based youth cycling programs. The Specialized Foundation fund- ed research to investigate how aerobic exercise specifically cycling can be- come an integral part of a comprehen- sive treatment program for kids with ADHD. Through its pilot programs researchers have been finding encour- aging results. Here are some of the pro- cesses and observations With research partners in the field several six-week pilot programs were established in middle schools across the United States. Indications are that kids brains are better prepared for learning when they take part in cycling activities improving many of the core deficits of ADHD like attention mood and behavior. And these programs have also shown improvements in academic performance as measured by standard- ized test scores. Furthermore bike riding has shown itself to be an ideal conduit to these pos- itive effects as its easily accessible for kids with varying degrees of fitness. So this means that students are able to par- ticipate at a higher rate than with other forms of aerobic activity. Beyond early findings of improved attention riding also develops physical fitness in kids. Researchers found a significant reduc- tion in participants Body Mass Index or BMI on average in their study. The evidence is stacking up that bi- cycling and active lifestyles can have a positive impact on mood self-esteem attention and academic performance as well as general fitness. Nearly six million children in the United States have been diagnosed as having ADHD. While many parents worry about the medications often prescribed to help their kids what they might not know is that help may be as close as those bikes sitting in the garage. Unlike looking at myself in the mirror there are no angles that improve the outlook of my checking balance. Its just a double digit number apologetically looking at me from my bank statement as if to say And you still havent bought groceries this week remember So as my rusty baby-blue Toyota Corolla is stored away Ill begrudgingly join the wave of com- muter bicyclists. My dearly beloved leaving me because I cant afford to buy her nice things. But before I commit to sweaty arrivals at every destination I have some ques- tions I need answered. Questions like do I need to wear bike-specific shorts I realize the extra padding is there for a reason but I just think Im a bit young to look like Im sporting adult diapers. And do I have to don a skin-tight shirt with strange pockets for my daily commute Sure the aerodynamics might save me a few seconds but at what cost A chafed nip- ple And another chafed nipple In addition to the outfit there are gaps in my bicycling knowledge that I would like to have filled before I give up my car. How do I change a flat tire without sobbing on the side of the road Should I wear a helmet Or should I simply enjoy the wind in my hair and possibly the pavement on my skull Are there rules for biking at night In the rain The snow And if not laws perhaps a few suggestions Ive decided to document my journey into this unknown world for the benefit of others who are dealing with bouncing checks or those who are just tempted by the fresh air of a morning commute -- on a bike not through a rolled-down window. I need to get my bike tuned up find a more comfortable seat learn traf- fic laws and reduce my overall riding stupidity. If someone needs to make a fool of themselves it should be me not you. You have important things to do. Me Im just a recent college graduate working at a job scooping ice cream soon without a car to get there. A rookie commuter if you will. Ideally Id be giving up driving for the health benefits of bik- ing or perhaps the environmental impact or maybe just to look bet- ter in my new shorts shorts my boss insists show too much thigh.
