S ome may say theres no free ride in life but during Boulders Walk and Bike Month there is. This quintessentially Boulder event celebrates its 40th year this year has something for everyone and the best part is that it doesnt cost a thing. The month-long celebration kicks off with the noncompetitive family-friend- ly Circle Boulder by Bicycle ride on Sunday June 5. The ride features two loops the 26-mile B-360 and the 16-mile B-180 both of which take riders on a leisurely discovery tour of Boulders extraordinary network of off-street multi- use paths including some little-known sections. Sorry there wont be partic- ipation trophies for all but there will be free Ben and Jerrys ice cream at the finish line The routes are clearly marked with painted ground blazes so both loops can be enjoyed year-round. And thats exactly the goal. According to Marni Ratzel City of Boulder senior transportation planner We celebrate Walk and Bike Month to encourage people to integrate walking and biking into their daily routines to be more active. We hope that people continue to embrace the social and health benefits of getting out and walking and biking every day. The Love to Ride Challenge June 5-11 is an online competition open to work- places and individuals which debuted during Winter Bike Week. Track your miles and calories and maybe even win some prizes. Ratzel said shes excited about introducing the workplace challenge for more than just a day. On June 22 we celebrate the 40th birthday of Bike to Work Day. Hosted by 50 local sustainability-aligned businesses such as the Dushanbe teahouse this event is a true darling of Walk and Bike Month. Carrie Simon a daily bicycle commuter and student advisor at CU says Bike to Work Day is an awesome community event. There is a heightened awareness that is appreciated even among drivers and pedestrians. NEW this year another milestone is the grand opening of the U.S. 36 Bikeway on June 18. With celebrations at the beginning and end the celebration bike ride leaves from Avista Hospital at 10 am bound for the Table Mesa RTD sta- tion. Finally the month wraps-up with New Belgium Brewerys free annual outdoor Clips Beer and Film Tour on July 8.
